Biking 30A from Seacrest Beach: Easy Rides on the Timpoochee Trail

There's a moment on every 30A trip when you stop checking the time. For a lot of our guests, it happens on a bike. The breeze picks up, the pines give way to a glimpse of blue water, and suddenly you're coasting into Rosemary Beach for coffee with nowhere you need to be.

That's why The Big Sea comes with six beach cruiser bikes, complete with helmets, locks and removable baskets. Here's how to make the most of them.

Meet the Timpoochee Trail

The Timpoochee Trail is the paved path that runs alongside Scenic Highway 30A for about 18 miles, from Dune Allen in the west to Inlet Beach in the east. It's wide, mostly flat and easy for riders of nearly every age, and it connects the beach towns that make 30A famous: Grayton Beach, WaterColor, Seaside, Seagrove, WaterSound, Seacrest, Alys Beach, Rosemary Beach and more.

Seacrest Beach sits near the eastern end of the trail, which means some of the prettiest towns on 30A are just a few minutes away by bike.

Ride 1: Seacrest to Alys Beach and Rosemary Beach (easy)

This is the ride everyone should take on their first morning. Head east and you'll roll into Alys Beach, with its striking white Caribbean-inspired architecture. Stop for a cold-pressed juice or a smoothie, take the photo everyone takes, and keep going.

Just beyond is Rosemary Beach, with its cobblestone paths, boutiques, galleries and cafés. Park the bikes, wander the shops and grab lunch before an easy ride home. It's the perfect half-day outing with kids.

Ride 2: Seacrest to Seaside (moderate)

Feeling ambitious? Head west along the trail toward Seaside, the town square famous for its food truck row, bookstore and pastel cottages. You'll pass through WaterSound and Seagrove along the way. It's a longer ride, so pack water and plan for a slow lunch before the return trip.

Ride 3: Sunset loop (anytime)

Some of our favorite rides don't have a destination at all. Just before sunset, take the bikes for a slow loop through the brick-paved lanes of Magnolia Cottages and the surrounding Seacrest streets, then park at the beach to watch the sky change color. Bring the baskets for snacks.

Tips for biking 30A

  • Go early. Mornings are cooler and the trail is quieter, especially in summer.

  • Bring the basics: sunscreen, sunglasses, water and your phone for photos.

  • Wear the helmets. They're right there with the bikes for the whole crew.

  • Lock up. Every bike has a lock, so use it when you stop in town.

  • Watch the crossings. The trail crosses side streets and driveways, so keep an eye out for cars, and walk bikes through busy town centers.

  • Ride single file and stay to the right so faster riders and walkers can pass.

Why biking is the best way to see 30A

Parking in the popular beach towns can be tough, especially in summer. On a bike you skip the traffic, roll right up to the coffee shop and feel the salt air the whole way there. Most of all, it slows you down. And slowing down is what a beach trip is for.

Your bikes are waiting at The Big Sea.
