Fall on 30A: Why October Is the Locals' Favorite Month
Ask anyone who lives along 30A to name their favorite month, and a lot of them will smile and say October. The summer rush has gone home. The water still feels like summer. And the evenings turn soft and gold in a way that makes you want to stay on the sand a little longer.
If you've only ever seen this stretch of coast in July, fall is a whole new beach. Here's why we love it, and how to make the most of it from The Big Sea in Seacrest Beach.
The weather feels like a gift
October days are usually warm and bright, with average highs in the low 80s and cool, comfortable nights in the low 60s. That's beach weather by day and open-the-porch weather by night.
The Gulf holds on to its summer warmth, too. Water temperatures off South Walton tend to sit in the high 70s in October, so swimming is still very much on the table. Pack a light sweater for the evenings and you're set.
Like any month on the coast, a fall storm can roll through now and then. Keep an eye on the forecast before you travel, and plan a slow porch day if the sky turns gray.
The beach has room to breathe
With school back in session, the sand opens up. You can spread out your chairs, walk a long way without stepping around anyone, and hear the waves instead of a crowd.
From The Big Sea, it's about a four-minute walk to the private Gulf Lakes beach access. Grab a couple of the eight backpack beach chairs from the house, toss the sand toys in a bag, and go. Some mornings it feels like the whole beach is yours.
Sunsets come a little earlier, and they're worth it
In mid-October the sun sets around 6:15 PM, and by Halloween it's closer to 6 PM. That means you can have a full beach day, rinse off, and still make it back to the shore for the show without missing dinner.
Fall light is clear and warm. The sky goes peach, then pink, then a deep violet over the water. Bring something to sip and stay until the first stars come out.
Bike weather is back
Summer heat can make a bike ride feel like work. In October, it's pure joy. The Big Sea has six beach cruisers with helmets, locks and baskets, so the whole crew can roll out together.
Rosemary Beach and Alys Beach are an easy ride from the house. Pedal over for coffee, browse the shops, and coast home in the cool air with the windows of the cottages glowing.

Event times can change, so check each event's page before you go.
Cozy evenings at the cottage
Fall nights at The Big Sea are made for the screened porch. Pull the shades, turn on the ceiling fan if it's warm, and settle into seating for eight. It's game-day heaven, too, with a 55-inch smart TV right out there in the fresh air.
Cook something simple in the kitchen, set the table for everyone, and let the evening stretch out. No one is in a hurry in October.
Who October is perfect for
Couples looking for a quiet escape. Friends planning a long weekend. Families with little ones who aren't in school yet. Grandparents who want the beach without the bustle. If your calendar has any wiggle room, fall is the time to use it.
The Big Sea sleeps eight across a king suite, a queen suite and a bunk room with four full beds, with three full baths. There's room for everyone, and the beach is just a short walk away.
October on 30A is the secret the locals keep. We'd love to share it with you. Check your dates and book direct, and come see why fall is our favorite season by the sea.
